A330 Normal Law

Released in May 2016, A330 Normal Law provides a perspective on Airbus fly-by-wire flight controls.

The work begins with a short  history of fly-by-wire flight controls. Though, most of us think of fly-by-wire as a recent innovation, it got its start in the 1950's. Indeed the idea is older than most of the pilots flying it!

But the real focus is on the characteristics of the flight control law itself, and the flight envelope protections it provides.

Most pilots going through Airbus training learn the book answers to the flight control laws ("g-load demand, angle-of-attack demand, etc), but the airplane is so natural to fly that many fail to give it a second thought at how different this is from a conventionally controlled airplane. Here, those characteristics are put in to perspective with even a surprise or two.
